Coinciding with a flurry of Puerto Rican tech and entrepreneurial activity at the start of this decade, 2011-2012 saw a revival in the Puerto Rican game development scene, with several developers joining forces to release independent games, as well as to organize and give a voice to the community. Biercade, a videogame arcade/ bar located in historic Old San Juan, became a central meeting place for veteran and hobbyist developers, hackers and designers.
The first game jam ever run in Puerto Rico was held there over a November weekend, in fall 2012. Groups of artists, programmers, music composers and designers would convene over 2 to 3 days, to passionately work on projects and present their work to the public at the end. Participants in these meetings would later go on to form their own companies, such as DogFire Games and Space Rhino Games .
